Felt is the oldest man made fabric and has a sustained heritage. Felt making has been practiced by nomadic people in central Asia to construct yurts or felted wool tents, which were strong and weatherproof. Scandinavians and Russians made felt boots and felt rugs, which continues to this day, and many eastern European countries have a strong felt making culture. Felt is still used for clothing, rugs and even housing in many countries all over the world. In Britain felt is used in a variety of ways, both commercially and industrially, but felt is becoming increasingly popular as an artistic or craft medium as it is so versatile. Creative Felt MakingThere are many ways of creatively using felt, either artistically or practically. Felt can be use to create the finest gauze-like material or so strong it can be made into three-dimensional objects, either solid or hollow. On an artistic level felt can be used for wallhangings, as a back-drop for hand or machine embroidery, and three-dimensional sculpture. Felt can also be used on a practical level for clothing, handbags and footwear. Each class that I offer demonstrates a different felting technique to enable felt makers to fully explore the medium.
