Rag Rugging is a process of using strips of fabric to make into a rug in a variety of ways.

Rag Rug Tradition

Rag Rug making was very much a working class tradition in Britain. Rag Rugs were made out of necessity and were rough strips of fabric generally cut out of clothes which were no longer in a condition to be used as anything other than rags.

Rag Rug making was predominantly an occupation in the North of England where many textile mills and factories were situated. The old clothes would be cut into strips and either hooked or prodded into an old sack. Rag Rugs were generally used until worn out and threadbare so early examples of Rag Rugs are very rare! Rag Rugging has been known in Britain and Europe for centuries; however it was America where it developed into an art form!

With the current trend towards recycling, rag rugging is an ideal way of using up any oddments of fabric or old clothes which are beyond being able to be recycled for the charity shops.
